You will complete a Level 6 Biomedical Scientist Apprenticeship Degree Apprenticeship and obtain a BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science at Nottingham Trent University in Nottingham. The degree takes place over 4 years, as a part time student, where you will be attending university one day a week during term time on day release.

Level 6

  • Cellular Pathology (blended e-learning)
  • Infectious Diseases and their control (blended e-learning)
  • Research Project
  • Professional Practice (3) (to include End-Point-Assessment)
  • Haematology and Transfusion Practice (blended e-learning)

How you’ll be taught

Apprentices will study on a day release basis throughout the year. Teaching methods include:

  • Lectures: supported through e-resources, theory sessions and small group seminars. 
  • E-learning: the University Virtual Learning Environment (NOW) is used to post lecture slides / other useful resources. 
  • Laboratory classes: hands-on learning of practical skills involving problem solving, data collection and observation. 
  • Discussions: held in one-to-ones and small groups regarding up-to-date research, oral presentations and posters. 
  • Work based learning: completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio leading to HCPC registration and other practical skills managed by the workplace mentor/supervisor. 

How you'll be assessed

The course uses a variety of assessment methods allowing apprentices to demonstrate a wide range of strengths:

  • Laboratory investigations: to assess a range of intellectual and practical skills.
  • Laboratory/research reports, poster presentations, essays, and examinations: to allow demonstration of writing skills.
  • Oral presentations and verbal defence of posters: to demonstrate their verbal communication skills.
